Your Book

Pictures

Fleuron handles pictures in four places: in the text of a chapter, on a page of their own, at the top of a chapter, and as the ebook cover. This article covers each one, and how to tell whether a picture is sharp enough.

Pictures Fleuron can use

Fleuron takes PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP pictures, up to 6 MB each. Fleuron keeps the picture inside your book file, so you don't need to keep the original next to it.

Tip: For print, a picture needs about 300 pixels for every inch it fills on the page. A picture that fills a 5-inch-wide text column needs about 1,500 pixels across.

Adding a picture to your text

  1. Click in the paragraph the picture should follow.
  2. Click ✱ ▾ on the toolbar and choose Image, or choose Text ▸ Image.
  3. Choose the picture.

The picture goes in after that paragraph.

Image properties

Click a picture in the editor to open Image properties:

  • Kind: how the style frames the picture.
    • Photograph gets your style's photo frame (change it in Styles ▸ Photograph).
    • Figure gets a thin border, for charts and diagrams.
    • Portrait can be round or rounded, depending on the style (change it in Styles ▸ Portrait).
    • Freestanding has no frame.
    • Book Cover gets a soft shadow, for showing your other books.
  • Size: Small, Medium, Large or Full width.
  • Flow (Small and Medium only): Left, Center or Right.
  • On a separate page (Large and Full width only).
  • Description: what the picture shows, for readers who use a screen reader.
  • Include in: All Editions, Ebooks Only or Print Only. See Ebook-Only and Print-Only Content.

At the bottom are Add caption, Replace image…, Remove and Done. After you click Add caption, type the caption under the picture.

Note: Apple Books asks for a description on every picture that isn't only decoration. Fleuron reminds you in Image properties when one is missing, and File ▸ Check Import… lists pictures without one.

Low resolution warnings

If a picture is too small to look sharp at its size, Fleuron marks it Low resolution in the editor and tells you in Image properties how many pixels wide it should be. The mark is only in the editor, never in your book.

For ebooks, Fleuron looks for about 350 pixels wide at Small, 600 at Medium, 900 at Large and 1,200 at Full width. In a print edition it asks for more, enough for 300 dpi on the page.

To fix it, click Replace image… and choose a larger version of the same picture. Or make the picture smaller on the page.

Full-page images

A Full Page Image is an element of its own: a picture on its own page, such as a map, an illustration or a custom title page.

  1. Choose Chapter ▸ Add Element ▸ Full Page Image. It goes after the element you're in.
  2. Click Choose image.

Under Print layout you can set:

  • Page span: Single page or Two-page spread.
  • Print extent: Text margins (inside the same margins as the text), Safe zone (a quarter inch from the paper edge) or Full bleed (to the paper edge, with the 0.125 in bleed KDP and IngramSpark expect).
  • Image scale: Fit to page (whole image shows) or Fill page (edges may be cropped).
  • Begin on: the right side, left side or either side. A spread always begins on the left.

Fleuron shows the ideal size in pixels for your trim size, and tells you whether your picture is sharp enough. These settings change the print edition only; ebooks always show the whole picture on its own screen. Fill in Description for screen readers at the bottom.

A full-page image can go anywhere in the book. It never appears in the table of contents.

Heading images

A heading image decorates the top of a chapter. Click ⚙ ▾ beside the chapter title and choose Add heading image…. You can use the same picture on every chapter with Use for All Chapters. See Chapter Headings.

The ebook cover

Add your ebook cover on the Ebook Cover tab of Title Info. Fleuron asks for a picture at least 2560 pixels high. The cover goes at the start of every ebook, but not into print. See Title, Author and Book Settings.

For a paperback cover, see Print Cover Template.

Pictures in different editions

  • Kindle image sizing, under Generation in Book Settings, chooses Higher Quality (up to 1200 px wide) or Smaller Size (up to 800 px wide). Smaller pictures lower Kindle delivery costs.
  • Whether the paperback prints in colour or black and white is set in Print Settings. See Print Overview and Settings.
  • To use one picture in the ebook and a different one in print (a colour map and a black-and-white one, say), add both and set one to Ebooks Only and the other to Print Only.
